Default anyone know what this is?

This is on my rifle...any ideas? It has "DAHL" inscribed on the side and " BILLINGS MONT" just under the DAHL. There are two holes on the face ( maybe for a spanner wrench) and PAT PEND inscribed in between the holes.

Pretty sure I found it for you. Officially called a "Gun recoil, flash and sound reducer assembly." Original design is from the early 60s, and it looks just like what you have.

The inventor has other designs. Looks like this is a compact suppressor that does not draw much visual attention.

It may very well be illegal.

It does not reduce the sound, it redirects it forward instead of the the side. I doubt it is very effective.

This design has it coming out the front bore just like coming out of a regular barrel with open muzzle. I would think that this is an older prototype design and, as you said, not as effective as newer longer designs.

Similar theory to the current Levang Linear Compensator. I put a Levang on a varmint AR. Didn't really
see any reduction in recoil or muzzle rise (it's a heavy gun) but it does send the sound forward, and the
sound level is reduced as perceived by the shooter. No overall reduction in sound---it's probably loud
as heck downrange.

There are some muzzle brakes out that have a screw on shield. Without the shield it works like any noisy muzzle brake. With the shield it directs the sound forward which helps if you are on a range with other shooters. I suffered eye damage from a muzzle brake on a 300 WM that moved in next to me on my left. Blast went right behind my glasses. My left eye was closed or it would have been worse.
