30-06 to .308 conversion.

I have an old semi auto I inherited in 30-06. It happens to be a jam-o-matic A.K.A. remington 742. The gas system has been blocked making it essentially a manual semi-auto due to the common afliction these models are known for. My question is is it possible to convert this to .308 without too much fussin and cussin. It has a high sentimental value and still shoots true but I'm not that big a 30-06 fan, great bullet, just not my favorite. Just looking for some different opinions and suggestions.

Would have to be re-barrelled. The 06 chamber is longer than the .308.

this might help ya a bit http://www.wisnersinc.com/additional_info/Remington_7407427400.htm like a lot of remington products it was a gun that was made not to last. yours may have one or more of the issues listed there but the good news is most are easily fixable.

they were made in 308 but it may take a new barrel new bolt and all new innards as there are huge differense between 308 and 30-06

Yeah its been diagnosed already. The reciever is worn on the inside to the point of no repair. Functions wonderfully with the gas system shut off though. Thought of getting the trigger group and lock bars and just convert it to a pump. Is there no such thing as an insert to be inserted into the chamber to shorten it to .308 case length? Keep in mind the gun no longer has to cycle as its all manually operated.

There HAVE been chamber inserts to switch from 30-06 to .308. The US Navy used them (w/ VERY poor success) for switching M1 garands to 7.62 NATO. The chamber insert kept getting ejected with a fired case, leaving the next round to go into an oversized chamber where it would not fire (bad ju-ju in combat). The case head is the same on both rounds, you would want to stick to heavier bullets (06 has diff rate of twist)

Ill also add that this is intended to be a truck/brush gun but do the inserts have to be custom made or just custom fit to the rifle?

$25.00 I have no basis to endorse this. (Translation- yer own yer own, Bub.)

They make several chamber inserts, including a 7.62X39 AND a .308 for 30-06 chambers.

Wow that looks like it may do the job
Thanks a bunch. Will have to put a spacer in the magazine but that's not a problem.
