Default 1911 .45acp to .40S&W

I would like to convert my Commander length .45 to .40S&W but I can't find a 4.25" slide to go w/ the aftermarket barrel I found. Can I use the stock slide or do I need the slide also & is there a way to shorten a 5" slide to work w/ the commander frame? Thanks in advance for any help.

Why would you want to do that?

Why not sell the gun and buy what you want?

I would have to agree. you could also find a .38 in a 1911 platform it that rings your bell.

No.

also, any reason for downgrading to a 40sw??

you can just use 185grn 45acp bullets. it will make a better gun than going to the inferior 40

I agree with these fine gentlemen above. Now if you really need your .40, I would suggest getting a used Dan Wesson 10mm C-BOB. The breechface is the same on the slide.
Change barrel and recoil spring.

Just a thought, a lot of the 40 barrels are ramped with a Para or Wilson/Nowlin cut. The ramped barrels are used to provide better case support for the higher pressure 40 round.
If your existing 45 is not ramped, then you would also need to get a smith to machine your frame for the proper ramp.

Be aware that 1911s are finicky little buggers and rarely are aftermarket parts truly "drop in". Odds are that your aftermarket barrel will require fitting by a competent gun smith in order to function reliably, accurately, or at all. A new slide would require fitting it to the frame.
