They are all over the place depending on where ya live.
Fleamarkets, tack auctions, etc etc.
In the interum, if you are wanting a low cost start,,, My first anvil was a steel I-beam, and my second was a section of railroad track.

Yep- Railroad rail comes in different weights. Got an 18" length of the heavy stuff, bored a hole in the top for a pritchel, and one to hold a hardy, used a torch to cut out the web of the rail under one end to make a horn- and have used it for years.

For about the first two years when I taught myself to do it I never used a hearty or a horn. By the time I thought I needed them Id bought an anvil.
The Ibeam worked pretty well. Welded some strap iron on the sides to reinforce it, then ran some hard face over the top, a little work with a grinder and it worked really well.
