I'm lazy. I start with a fine file and then use a few grits of sandpaper with oil on a mouse pad (strop) up to 2000. Takes about 5 minutes and leaves a shaving sharp polished edge.

better judged by twelve than carried by six.
I don't need No stinking signature.

Yep...anytime you see an orange glow at the contact point on something like this gadget, you've ruined your knife's edge retaining ability. Sharpening a blade should never involve heat. Slow honing strokes on sharpening stones is the best IMHO.
