Any knife should work as long as it's well made. Affordable knives include Gerber, CRKT, Kershaw, Buck, among others, Mid grade would include Benchmade and the like and for top end, the sky's the limit on price.

Look at the Cold Steel Recon 1.

Spyderco has some good options too.

I am a big fan of Benchmade. When I wore a suit everyday I carried a Mini-Griptilian clipped inside the waistband of my pants. IMO a knife with a 3" - 3.5" blade is more than adequate to carry for general use, including self defense, especially in an urban environment, unless one is fighting a zombie hoard. Although I personally prefer Benchmade, Spyderco also has a lot of good models to choose from.

I can't believe SW went Chinese as well. I have had issues w Chinese cutlery and it was supposed to be German Steel n manufactured in China.

I've had better luck w $8 Chicago Cutlery to be honest.

The best "Get Off Me" knife I know of is a "Push Knife." Very old design but rarely seen these days. Mass produced in WW I due to its effectiveness w relatively untrained troops. Must know your State's laws.

Even a plastic trainer is dangerous. In CA, a female teenage killed another in a fight w one. Not sure if knife laws apply to plastic ? Cold Steel makes a few models.

Too bad my local government thinks they're too dangerous or somehow incite people to commit crimes because of the nature of their design.

I hate CRKT with a passion. I'm slightly fonder of Kershaw. Have had serious issues with both in random breakage.

Benchmade... I can't say enough about Benchmade. Only downside, damn, they ain't cheap.

Kershaw for me won't hold an edge very long. Sharpens fast and well but dulls fast.
