samurai swords
A while back I was sick in the hospital and had some weird dreams. In one i was told I needed a Japanese sword. Since I have bought three. I hadnt been in Japan for 35 years. Its a complicated thing. Like guns you can spend as much as you want....doc

OK, I didn't just buy a blade because of a dream, but the dream renewed an interest I had had since I spent some time in Japan 40 years ago. The first sword I bought was a Shinwa straight blade (which I used in the dream). It has a folded steel blade. I got it from BudK knives. I assume it was conventionally tempered and the hamon etched on cosmetically. Then I did some research at SwordBuyersGuide.com. Next I bought a Cold Steel top of the line tanto. It is not a traditional tanto, but has a blade which is an excellent example of a sandwich blade and is the sharpest knife I ever saw. Next I bought a Hanwei practical katana with the curved blade and authentic hamon of a traditional mud tempering. Most recently I bought a Musashi Hiryuu since it was rated so highly for a very modest price. I will probably buy a short sword someday, and if I ever get rich I will buy a genuine antique.

That shinwa is beautiful. How's the overall quality?
I have no respect for cold steel anymore, and will never again in my life buy another of their products. I'll tell you why-
They sell other brands and makers as their own. They do make and sell their own products, but they also sell from other makers, especially when it comes to swords, particularly "Windlass steelcrafts".
I have nothing at all against that practice, so long as it's noted, something along the lines of "Cold Steel presents this Windlass Steelcrafts saber" or something similar. But to claim it as your own, I think is pretty sheisty.
There are a number of swords that they buy from them, take their markings off, color the handles (or change them entirely) and market them as their own. That is dishonest. I kinda have this thing against liars.

Here is one example. The scimitar/shamshir sword. If you ever get a chance to hold one and look closely (I have) you can see where the Windlass Steelcrafts etching was polished off and Cold Steel was added.

They are all pretty high quality. I like the Damascus steel in the Shinwa. The Hanwei is the best cutting blade. None of them is very ornate.
I didn't know that about Cold Steel. That's not good. The tanto, however, is one of their premier items from their main line.
My dissertation was in solid state physics and I know a bit about metalurgy. What makes great steel is pretty well known, how to make it is another story......doc
