Default Need some information on Katanas

I just ordered a couple of Katanas,I believe one is going to be a stainless steel sword,and the other is carbon steel.What's the difference and will I actually be able to cut things with them?

You could open your mail or hang them on your wall!!


Who made them, are they differentially tempered, full tang, what is the carbon content of the steel and where are the pics!!

If its not full tang, hang it on your wall for decoration. If it is full tang, you can slice watermelon at the 4th of July picnic. I have one on the dresser in my bedroom - in case I run out of ammo.

They actually haven't arrived yet,I found a little info on a couple of sites that say it is full tang,sharpend carbon steel blade,but it don't say carbon content.It was selling for $199 on one site,but I paid alot less than that,I have a pic of it I found online,and as far as the other katana,I have no info on that yet until I get it.

I seriously know nothing about katanas,I don't know what any of the technical names are,I know it has a scabbard,and I call the rest the handle,the blade,and the handguard.I remember when I was a kid hearing a guy say that a real katana is folded alot and will cut a stopsign down and costs $10,000.

Brief tutorial, and opinions will vary....

The stainless is a wallhanger. Don't cut with it, don't even swing it.

Depending on your purposes, it's tough to find a functional carbon steel blade under $300. If you did, you must now show it unconditional love. DO NOT store it in the scabbard. Invest in a cleaning kit, keep it oiled.

If the tang is spot welded, do not swing it or attempt to cut.

Your katana will not cut stop signs, I would start with pool noodles, and if you develop some skill, you could move up to tatami mats. If you get really good, you can wrap bamboo in the tatami.

What you've just done is entered a world. Look these things over closely when you get them, post pics, I'd be happy to offer some guidance.

It's funny to hear how good a katana has to be to cut stuff.I have a $12 colombian machete that I have cut through chains and nails with,I will have to be alot more careful with a katana,they might not cut through wood and metal like a cheap machete,but I highly doubt my machete would cut through 2 and a half pigs with a single swing like that guy did on deadliest warrior did with a katana,not that my katana would either.

Back in the day, they used to produce a knife for ranchers that finished off the castrating process for bulls. The blade was inscribed "for flesh only".

Swords are a specialized blade. They were never meant for clearing brush of picking toenails. They, too, are "for flesh only".

The vast majority of katana on the market have spot welded rat tail tangs. I have seen them snap from merely swinging the sword, sending a sharp 3 foot piece of metal flying.

Cold Steel is producing a katana shaped machete, for those who can't resist felling a forest with a sword like instrument.
