Everything that does something I cant with my bare hands is a tool and Anything can be a weapon. My knuckles are a weapon if I need them to be. knives are tools.

Knife: Weapon or tool?
Definitely a tool. I carry a small pocket knife at all times to open or cut things and when in the woods a hunting knife for those tasks. If I needed to use it for hunting, it would be for making snares or traps but not for taking game directly.

As the saying goes, "don't bring a knife for a gun fight".

To me it's both but if I'm using my knife to fight with I've totally screwed up...

It is both. A weapon is a subclassification of tool; IOW a weapon is a tool for injuring another.

That's like asking if a pickup is a Truck first or a Vehicle first.

I usually carry my knife daily, until I realized that I left mine in my other pants at home. Bad job out of me...

I have knives that are tools
I have knives that are not tools.
I have knives that are not tools for four legged animals.
I have knives that are not tools for two legged animals.

I consider it a tool. It is only a weapon in the sense that anything, even a rolled up newspaper, can be used as a weapon.

It's a tool first. But I always make sure it's strong and sturdy enough to use as a weapon just in case.
