which well regarded and affordable fixed blade? looking forward to your input on this Hock.

i have had a pretty track record with Gerber brand knives and multi-tools over the years. good quality and a decent price point.

The one Gerber knive I've owned was crap. It was a good design. Poor execution. Plus gerber always uses mystery "surgical steel".

I'm taking the literal meaning of the question on this one, 1 knife for everything.

A J. A. Henkels 8" Chef's knife, good high carbon steel, full tang, 3 rivet construction, German engineered and made.

I'm thinking that no matter the situation, we're going to be eating much more often than fighting. The 8" chef may not be the quintessential fighting knife, but it is the benchmark in the kitchen.

Oh, BTW, I wouldn't feel "under-knifed" with a good 8" chef in my hand in a fight.

That first one is a good knife. Not the best, but good. Pretty strong. Has a ceramic (or similar material) rod embedded in the backside of the sheath for sharpening, but it's not nearly aggressive enough for that blade. It would have to be sharpened and honed really well before ever touching the rod to do any good. The backside of the drop point is sharpened too IIRC.

Trip -- you should know (former Marine?). The sharpening rod is not a grindstone, for sure. The false edge? Not false!

Very true, all counts.
That knife would need to be sharpened by a coarse grit diamond rod though. I hate diamond rods.
