I am not to sure what brand but it is a folding knife about 4'' long and about 2/5's is serrated and I have used multiple kinds of stones and the ones that are shaped like a V and you put the blade in it.

Just so happens I am about to do a head to head test with two different, but very good, sharpening systems and will post results here on the forum.

The Edge Pro Apex will be going head to head against the Wicked Edge Sharpening System.

More to follow.....

I also have a tight budget so I would prefer to spend less than $35.

Here you go, shop around for this one. It's a good unit and right in your price range.

Hello everyone. I've been reading alot of info on EDC knives for a while now, in order to get ready to purchase my first one and right now I've narrowed it all down to either the:

Cold Steel American Lawman

or

Buck Alpha Hunter Folder(no gut hook)

Any opinions whether each is better than the other would be really great and would help me decide which one to buy. Price isn't taken into consideration and obviously weight doesn't matter also.

Thank you very much for your input!

If this thread is still active...

What advantages does carbon steel offer over stainless ? Can good stainless steel equal of exceed carbon steel in areas such as edge retention, ease of sharpening, blade strength etc. ?
Are carbon steel knives simply better except for rust resistance ?

Stainless exceeds carbon in strength, edge retention and rust resistance. Carbon exceeds stainless in sharpness and ease of sharpening. You have to sharpen carbon more often but its a lot easier to do. I despise stainless blades. You will never get one as sharp as a good carbon blade.

The terms "carbon steel" and "stainless steel" are so general as to be almost meaningless. In order to get any sort of realistic comparison between two steels you need to know the type of steel. Here is a good article on the different properties of knife steel, and a description of the qualities of different types. A MUST READ to make an intelligent choice when buying a knife.
