Default Getting back into collecting...

Seems as I get older, I'm returning to the fun stuff of my youth. Always did like knives and I'm getting the fever once again. Already have several that I picked up recently and have been researching brands and quality. I know the top ones are:
Benchmark
Spyderco
Kershaw
Gerber
Cold Steel

What are your thoughts on brands like:
Shrade
Ontario
Buck
SOG
S&W

Any good brands I'm missing?

I like Bucks and Victorinox, picked up a StayGlow SD the other week, it became an instant favorite.

I have a K-Bar 1211 7" Black, I'm looking to buy a K-Bar Black Tanto with just a bit shorter blade as the 7" is a tad too long for every day carry, but I like the large grip as it feels good in my hand. K-Bar knives have really hard blades and hold a good edge, most all of my stainless steel knives don't hold a good edge for very long, except for a Kershaw combo that was given to me many years ago. I'm always on the lookout for high carbon blades. I drove the K-Bar blade clear to the hilt in the skull of a buck I hit with my truck, just to make sure it wasn't suffering anymore.

Yeah, I forgot to add Ka-Bar to the list. They have some fixed blades that are beasts.

If you concentrate on your top five, you can build a very nice, if very expensive collection. I am such a tightwad I won't buy the top list, but I am fortunate that my Son has been Benchmarking me for the last two Christmas'.

I hear ya! Gerbers are well priced and I have a couple of those. I don't need top of the line either but don't want junk. Ordered a SOG and Buck recently. Looking forward to seeing their quality.

Here is a dirt cheap knife everyone should have:

Opinel carbon blade

on Amazon from a variety of sellers in the $16.00 range. Or LL Bean or other large sports outlets for about twice as much.

Cold Steel knives are mediocre quality and seriously over-hyped.
Schrades are mostly made in China.
Benchmade makes good knives.

I was looking at a benchmade griptilian at the gun show on Sunday. Too bad the vendor was too busy trying to sell generic Chinese crap to kids, he might have made a bigger sale. Or maybe all the profit is in crap.
