What other types of metal would you suggest? I want to buy a good amount of it.

Find a welding shop and see if they can get u some high carbon steel 1/4" thick and to the length u want

I have seen some beautiful blade made from wire rope heated in a forge and hammered out that resemble Damascus steel

Use old industrial saw blades if u can find them also find a saw mill and see if u can buy a old blade or two from them. That's a good start for metal.

What type of handle would be easiest for a knife that just has the blade and a small little part that will go into the handle.
