Very good article on the different types of steel used in knifemaking. I'm a big fan of 52-100 and D2.

While D2 is technically a carbon steel, it is about as close as a carbon steel can get to being stainless. Very good corrosion resisitence.

There are so many with a little different properties. I have a coupla D2's and M390's, a few S30V's and many 154CM's. But I wouldn't hate on a better 440 stainless (B or C). The knives I carried and used the most daily? Don't laugh but after I got tired of carrying my Buck "brass knuckles" 425M steel folding Hunter in its leather belt pouch I used a Victorinox Swiss Army Knife daily for years till I wore out the steel lanyard hole it hung from a beltloop on. I may have run a hone over the blades twice. Then I paid what I thought was alotta money for a cute little serrated AUS-8 Spyderco original Walker a buddy sharpened once. He also gave me a very discretly clipped (as you can see) Benchmade serrated 3-1/2"-blade Pika (now discontinued) in 440C I never sharpened which I took to carrying and still do when occasions suggest it, but usually it is the slightly more diminutive serrated Spyderco Native with its CPMS30V "supersteel" that I carry. These were, are, all great working knives.

Ya know, as much of a knife nut as I am, I don't know much of anything about the different steels.

My current EDC is a Bali-Song. Not any run of the mill butterfly knife...

http://www.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benchmade

Read the history section of Banchmade.

The Bali-Song brand (as I'm sure some of you know), was the startup brand by the founder of Benchmade, which later became Pacific cutlery, which then moved (Oregon I guess) and became Benchmade.

It's by far the best pocket knife I've ever carried, in regards to ease of use and carry, edge retention, and WARRANTY as it's still covered, even though it was likely built in the 70's and the company has undergone very significant changes (I called and verified warranty personally).

And I don't even know what kind of steel it is. The blade is marked with the Bali-Song trademark, made in USA, and the patent number, but not the type of steel used as many are.

My current edc is a vintage Gerber Folding Sportsman from the 70's, when Gerber made good knives; if I'm in a suit I clip a Benchmade mini-Gripitilain to my waist band. I also usually slide on of the Queen D2 trappers in my pocket.

Funny u say that TX. I often carry my CRKT Rave dressed for work-work as a "gentleman's pocket knife." It is deceptively small, handsome, and light enough to be considered such (2.9" 8cr13MoV steel blade which is kinda like AUS-8 or 440B). ...by me at least should anybody else ever take note of it. Unless and until they may try to open it that is -- they don't call it Burst Opening for nothing! Discontinued but guaranteed for life and I have two...
