With those limitations:
Bean bag or rubber shot loads for your shotgun.
There are frangible loads for other types of firearms. My dad had Glaser Safety Slugs in a nightstand gun at one point. They are not without their compromises. You'll want to do some research.
Tasers or similar might be worth a look. The real deal Taser ain't cheap and may not be legal.
Bear Spray or some form of pepper spray similar is a decent option.

IMHO, you want devices that will have a range that keeps a perp out of the magic 21 foot danger zone. I tend to be of the opinion that unless one is very good at hand to hand combat, you should leave the knives and sticks to the experts.

A .22 LR or a pellet gun would probably be safe.
