Tires are a very poor test medium for expanding bullets. The Hollow Point is designed to expand from fluid pressure. Penetration was half that of FMJ's? That does not surprise me at all. Do not feel under-equipped with this ammo. There is nothing "wrong" with your selection. Are Hydra-shocks or Gold Dots better, sure. Shot placement is the key anyway. Practice, practice, practice.

As long as you are using expanding ammo, you should be fine.

I was wondering about how accurate a test the tires would be, considering how vast the difference of tire rubber and flesh is. In spite of that fact there was a huge disparity in penetration between the two rounds (WWB JHP and Remmington UMC FMJ). About half of the FMJ rounds actually punched through both sides of the tire, where as the JHP rounds mostly stopped after passing through one side.

I will have to test them with milk jugs when I get the chance.
