If you're trying out new ammo to make sure your gun is ok with it, if you shoot a mag successfully, should you go into rapid fire for the rest of the box to see if it will keep up through heat up?

Meh, shoot at least 50 rounds through your gun. Most modern guns and modern ammo "should" be fine. I presume you are inquiring about defensive ammo. Some guns seem to have issues with truncated hollow points like the Hornaday XTP. Speer Gold Dots have a reputation for feeding like ball ammo. If it won't feed GD's, it probably won't feed ball.

I guess what I'm asking is this: Is rapid fire the worst case scenario for testing ammo feed issues, providing you first make sure at least the first ten or so go without a hitch?
