What is +P ? Safe or not?
 

I have an older Rossi .38 Special Revolver.

Would it be safe to use +P bullets in it?

I see alot of selection for +P .38 Special bullets but don't really know anything about what the +P means? or if it's safe.

+P ammo is just a "hot" load

check with manufacturer, but i personally wouldnt hesitate to use them but wouldnt shoot them a lot

and 'hot' means a higher internal pressure than standard pressure which increases the muzzle velocity. i've never looked at the actual numbers but +p is around 10% hotter than standard pressure. then there's +p+....

not all manufacturers will recommend +p ammo in their handguns.

The model number will help!

For example a model 80 is not +P rated but an 82 is.

I have a Ruger LCR .38 that I have shot both .38 and .38+P rounds. The added kick from the +P rounds can be a little hard on the hand. :cool: so I usually just shoot a few of the +P and save them for defense rounds, and practice with the standard rounds. :D

I have put about 700 +P+ through my Model 15 and its still ticking.

I am not sure what model my Rossi .38 special, is. I am trying to find out in another post. But here is a picture of it:

open the cylinder an look inside the crane. model should be stamped there.

Call Rossi and ask them. (As you should with any manufacture.)

Get the name of the spokesperson.

Their answer will speak volumes about their products and company!
