Default What length for 308

G'day fellas
After purchasing my new Howa 308 I have decided to involve myself in reloading.....I have purchased both Lyman 49th edition as well as Richard lee reloading manuals and have read both of them in side out several times over....I am confused as to the COL beetween one manuals suggestion and the other....Lyman suggest 2.005 case length and Richard lee's book suggests 2.015,I'll be using powder AR2208 and 168gr sierra match kings with 44.0gr powder,I'll be also using once fired federal brass with Redding dies,I think I no why Lyman would suggest 2.005..maybe it's so it will fit all chambers I don't no for sure.....could one of you pros please explain this theory to me as again I'm a bit confused........cheers

I reload for .308 and use 2.015" as OAL and they worked in my Semi Auto Saiga and my buddy's Sig 716 and that's out of a Speer reloading book that came with my reload set

I just pulled out two boxes of factory ammo out of the safe and measured the case length with my calipers....both federal 150gr soft point and Highland 150gr soft points measured in at 2.005....starting to make me think what's right and what's wrong when it comes to reloading manuals....I guess I'll have to wait for more answers to come in....cheers

It may have to do with the bullet weight too. I know heavier bullets are a tad longer and I only load 165+ grain so I'm not sure what a 150 would be for me

I think we both need the answer to this question as to what is considered to be the best case trim length for 308 or better still wait and see what the pros have to say.....cheers

They are not different.

The Max case length for the 308 Win is 2.015 inches. Lyman shows this in the cartridge drawing at the beginning of the 308 Data.

Lyman also list the "Trim-to-Length" of 2.005 inches. That is the Min you should trim your brass to. Most all bottle necked rifle cartridges have a "Trim-to-Length" that is .010 less than their SAAMI Max.

You do not have to trim your brass to 2.005 every time you size it and load it as long as it is under 2.015. Your brass can be anywhere between 2.015 and 2.005.

For best accuracy it's best to have them all the same length, but not a requirement.

BTW, COL stands for Cartridge Overall Length and is used to describe a completed round with bullet. When referring to an empty case it is simply called "Case Length".

All of my .308 brass is trimmed to 2.015 and loaded with an OAL of 2.80. I shoot the loads I make in both my NM M1A and Savage bolt-action rifle with very good results.
