I just bought 2-16 round paper packets of 7.62x25 at a gunshot for $7.99 a piece. After inspecting one packet I found several with hairline cracks in the neck and one with a crack from the neck to almost all the way down the casing. It's 1953 Bulgarian production. What might have caused this?

The sad thing is you might have dud rounds if moisture got into the powder with those cracks if there long enough. Most times a small crack won't affect shooting performance but green ammo will most likely swell in the chamber causing jams.

Ok thanks. They were stored in .50 cal ammo cans, so moisture shouldn't be a problem. So they're all safe to shoot?

Cracked ammo? I wouldn't risk it. A few cents per round is NOT worth risking your gun, your hands, and most importantly your LIFE over.

EDIT: I looked into it some, and some people have shot ammo with minor cracks (same caliber) and it worked ok for them. I'd still be EXTREMELY CAUTIOUS about using it though. The one with the crack all the way down you should toss period.

Personally, I wouldn't do it.

There is no way I would be shooting ammo with cracked cases. When I reload I toss anything that is cracked.

In an absolute emergency, I would not want a gun blowing up in my hand. I have emergency ammo. It is all first rate.
