Default got this one right....

We all know there are some good self defense rounds out there such as Hydra shoks, HSTs, Gold Dots....the list goes on. I wanted to know about the Wal mart available self defense loads, WWB and Remington UMCs. Since I have armed my wife with a 38 and Gold Dots I wanted a cheap practice round that would simulate the GDs and WWB and UMCs 125 +p are VERY close so I've picked up about 200 of them. After looking at them for a while I started to wonder how they would perform as a SD round but my internet searches showed no results. So I decided I would do my own testing on these two bullets as well as some UMC 45 JHPs I've picked up and I played with some 45 high end stuff for fun.

NOTE: I did this for myself and out of my own curiousity. I'm only sharing my results and my opinions, you have to decide for yourself. My test media is not balistics gel or a dead animal but I believe it shows what a bullet can be capable of. Feel free to comment or ask questions, I'll do my best to respond.

The test:
all shots were fired from a Ruger SP101 from a distance of 7 yards into 18" of wet news paper. My penetration measurements are rounded but expansion was measured with a caliper accurate to .001"

Pen Exp
1) 5.5" .565
2) 6" .544
3) 6.25" .421

Remingtion UMC 125gr +p SJHP

dsc_0387.jpg

1) 7.75" .537
2) 7" .525
3 7.5" .548

After seeing these results I was not very impressed so I lumped my response together. They expanded some what but not nearly what modern bullets are capable of. I do not see myself using these for self defense in the future, I'll stick with my Gold Dots.

Sorry, I forgot the GDs when I loaded up my ammo. There are many tests available on the web.

Default Now the 45

45 ACP. All ammo was fired from a Kimber Pro Carry 2 4" model, again from 7 yards into 18" of wet news paper.

I picked up some Remington UMC 230gr JHPs at Wal Mart for $36 a few months back but I havent' seen them since. They can be found at Dick's for $65 which is still cheaper then premium self defense ammo.

UMC 230gr JHPs

1) 7.75" .730
2) 8.5" .728
3) 8.5" .768

I was pleasantly surprised but the results with this ammo. They don't get HUGE but they did expand well and penetration was good. I dont know how they would do with heavy clothing but with what I see here this ammo could be concidered given more testing with barriers.

Taurus Copper(Barnes DPX) 185gr Pure Copper Bullet

dsc_0385.jpg

dsc_0378.jpg

Pen Exp
1) 6" .815
2) 6.25" .844
3)6.75" .820

I've had these for about 2 or 3 years. A couple of years ago the copper thing was coming on strong and I drank the kool aid. These bullets are highly rated as a self defense round and I believe they belong there. Expansion is outstanding, pushing 2 times the original diameter. Penetration is reasonable here but different in gel. If this bullet when 6" into my chest it would be well into vitals but again, they go much deeper into gel. I have carried these and I would again if needed.

Default 45 continued....so does my learning of how to post pics

Federal Hydra Shok 230gr

dsc_0380.jpg

Pen Exp
1) 9" .678
2) 9.25" .675
3) 9.25" .690

I know Hydra Shoks have a long track record of being strong self defense ammo but I have to say I was a little disappointed in the expansion. Penetration was great but if they don't expand it should be. I'm not trying to steer anyone away from these, I still think they are a good choice but I was still disappointed.

Federal HST 230gr +p

2) 8" .993
3) 8.25" .888

You have now met my carry ammo. This has been my ammo of choice for some time now but I never did my own testing so I thought it was time. They penetrate deep, expand to twice their original size and are cheaper then GDs, Hydra Shocks, Golden Sabers, Rangers...almost every premium ammo costs more and most don't perform as well. You can see in the picture that is one of the bullets completely covering a quarter!

I would like to note that the Taurus ammo and HSTs have a very sharp edge on them. I could cut myself with them if I was careless. I wish I could have weighed these bullets but I don't have a scale that goes over 100 grains. If reliablity is a concern for anyone here, my Kimber ate all of this ammo as fast as I could pull the trigger without a single problem.

Anyway, I had fun doing this. Read it, ask questions, share thoughts, whatever.

Great job Spitty, I do use Federals myself, and I have even bought them at WallyWorld. They are good quality ammo and they have worked for me with no FTF and they have plenty of knockdown power and expansion, as you have demonstrated.

I would not hesitate one bit, using them in a SD situation.

Now.....there might be others here.....cough....*clear my throat*....that would like at least a minimum of 12 inches of penetration and more, with expansion........ But to each his own, just like their own choices of handguns and caliber.
