I only use mag primers for true mag loads with powders that insist on the hotter ignition. 231 in .357 mag, Max load. standard primer.

You can sub in small rifle primers, but they are no easier to find. Small rifle primers are very comparable to mag primers with regard to cup thickness and flame temp BUT that does not mean you can sub small pistol mag primers for small rifle primers in rifle loads. The cup thickness is "comparable" not the same.

A lot of IPSC Open class shooters use samll rifle primers for major power factor .38 super loads (and .38 TJ, .38 super comp, 9X21, 9X23, .356TSW, .355 super, etc) They are pushing pressures way beyond the SAAMI specs for the super.
Your right Robo on primer shortages, but I was able to get a 5K brick of the Rem. 6 1/2's from my local gun club for $130.00. Still have around 1500 Win. Sm. Pistol primers, to use for my light loads-.32acp.,.380+light .38spl. wad cutters. Been looking hard for Sm.Pistol for awhile. Will volume buy, if I find them at a FAIR price!!

Thanks Robo, I will have to read through the Lee book again. I must have missed some stuff.

Some stuff you will not find in print in a book from Lee or Lyman or any other such company. Their lawyers would give birth to an entire herd of cattle. They are going to toe the liability line. Small pistol in pistols small rifle in rifles etc. Unless a particular combination has been tested, re-tested and submitted to HP White laboratory for additional testing they are not going to publish it.

To me there is a big difference between published "safe" data, unpublished "safe" data and just plain stupid. I have data I have worked up that I trust in my guns with me on the trigger. I have seen data that was irresponsible at best. Intentional double charge of "X" powder for a manstopper .38 spl round using an inverted hollow base wad cutter. "Guaranteed to blow the balls of a charging rhino at 30 paces."

IMHO if you cannot fill a thimble with your common sense, you have no business around firearms, much less reloading equipment.
