S&w. 38
A friend of mine owns a jewelry store. He has two S&W. 38 on hand. One is a snub nose the other is the old police issue. When he showed me the guns I noticed real quick that both were loaded with +P's. I was always told that +P's gave to much back pressure for the old. 38's. And told him it just might blow up on him and not hit the bad guys. He assured me his personal "Gun Nut" told him that the +P's were fine for the old. 38's. I told him to get a new "Gun Nut" that did not take chances. And possibly give advice that could injure a friend. Was I wrong? I come from a family of cops that assured me +P's are not the right ammo for a pair of old S&W. 38's. What is your opinion?

Personally I would not use +p ammo in an older J or K frame but thats just my personal opinion. Newer frames may indeed be up to the task as would .357 Magnum frames.

I wouldn't think the +P would give the jeweler much advantage anyway, unless the robber had on a few heavy coats.

Shoot him in the face at close range coat doesn't matter.

I know the older police issue is a J frame. I had one at one time. The snubby I have no clue about. Being around law enforcement all my life, they tend to be on the conservative side. Hit the bad guy and be able to go home at the end of the shift. I am just concerned for him. He has them for protection. But rarely goes to the range. I wish he would. So he could find out in a controlled setting what the gun is going to do. In a panic, I fear what might happen. Thanks for the input.

Drop open the cylinder. The model # should be under the ejection rod opening. The snub may be model 30 or 36. Do not use +P.

Suggest to your friend that he has a responsibility to log some range time before he straps on a firearm. If he escalates a robbery attempt by drawing a weapon that he is unfamiliar with he, or someone else, may wind up dead. Sorry if that comes off as preachy but knuckleheads like that give all serious, responsible gunowners a bad image.

That is exactly what I was thinking. I just needed to hear it from like mined people. Who ever his "Gun Nut" is, takes chances that is not needed. I tend to stay away from people like that. Thanks.
