Reviving this thread. In my bullet mold collection I found a Lyman 457193- casts a flat nose 405 grain bullet. Anybody have any loads for that bullet that I can fool around with? I know I have several other .458" molds in storage. I wish there was some sort of organization to my storage!

45 grains of 3031 under that bullet will give you a load that's not too hard on the shoulder, but still powerful.

These are fine old rifles. But do not forget this rifle was designed around steel processing of 100 years ago. The pressures created by modern double and single base powders were not known in 1900. The rifle would most likely take the modern high pressure loads. But this is not a modern 336 action. I would remain in the lower pressure range of Trail Boss or a BP Sub. These loads killed every thing in the past. That was before or present big game animals discovered Ballistic vest.
