Default Reloading .30-40 Krag??

I finally got my own reloading setup and was wondering if I can load .30-40 Krag with Reloader 15 powder? I was reading about the powder and it said it is for use with .30 cal. but I cant find any data with people actually using reloader 15... Im new to this and need some help!!! Thanks!!! I cant wait to shoot my Win 1895!!!

The only load Hornady 8th edition has listed for RL-15 is for their 220RN bullet.
Starting load is 28.3gr RL-15 gives 1600fps
Max listed is 33.8gr RL-15 gives 1900fps.

Are you dead set on using RL-15? What other calibers (if any) are you going to load for in the future?
For example, something like IMR 4350 has a lot of listed loads in various bullet weights for 30-40 Krag, but also works great in a lot of other calibers like 243, 7mm-08, 30-06, 7mag etc, etc

Starting out, im gonna be reloading my Win 1895 (.30-40), Marlin .30-.30 and my 7.7 Jap Arisaka.. As for the RL-15, the powder came with the reloading set up and I have like 4 lbs of it..... Ive found the data for the .30-30 and the 7.7 using this powder, If its good for those, shouldnt it be good for the .30-40?

I want to make just a light plinking load for the .30-40, Not a uber hunting load or anything.... I found these 100 Gr. round nose bullets that I was thinking of getting

Speer Bullets 30 Caliber (308 Diameter) 100 Grain Plinker Round Nose Soft Point Box of 100 - MidwayUSA

Thats what I thought!! I really dont plan on shooting the .30-40 much, just to go plink every once in a while....

Well nothing listed in Lyman for the light bullet you posted with RL15
I've got loadings listed for RL-15 for a 150gr Sierra(something like this looks about the cheapest Sierra Pro-Hunter Bullets 30 Caliber (308 Diameter) 150 Grain Spitzer Box of 100 - MidwayUSA ), 180gr speer, and 220 Hornady RN.

What kind of bullet would be good to shoot outta both a .30-30 and a .30-40? would a 150 gr. flat point work? (My .30-30 is tube fed)

Ill take any data you have. Thanks! I just bought a new reloading book with all 3 cals I listed. Ill see what it says....

I've never loaded anything for the 30-40 Krag but the 150gr FP do work great out of a 30-30 and should work in the 30-40. My one bud used to have great results on whitetails with the Sierra Pro-Hunter Bullets 30 Caliber (308 Diameter) 150 Grain out of his 30-30.

Hopefully someone with 30-40 experience will be along to help...

Trez, that 1895 Winchester you're going to be shooting the .30-40 in has a box magazine as I recall. The concern for using round-nose or flat-tip ammo really only extends to tubular magazines where the point of the bullet rests against the primer of the round in front of it in the magazine. With a box style magazine you can use just about any bullet style you like as long as it feeds reliably. That said though, I would think round-nose bullets would probably be the way to go if you can find some that suit you.

I looked in several of my old and new loading manuals and couldn't find anything in .30-40 Krag using RL-15. The loads I saw used my favorite powders like IMR-4895, IMR-4350 and IMR-4831.

I have a friend telling me I should get some Alliant 2400. He says it should work in all three calibers. I made some Arisaka rounds last night using it. I havent shot them yet though.... Plus he said its inexpensive, around $60 for 5 lbs locally.

Really the first two im gonna start to reload is the .30-40 and the .30-30. Im not going to shoot the .30-40 much, thats why I want a compatible bullet for both. Also he can cast his own so I would like some data for cast bullets if you have any..
I have the dies for the Krag, but need the .30-30 and 7.7....

Thanks again!
