Default Recommendations for .308 ammo

I am in the market for some .308 ammunition and I would like to get any input that I can on brands to avoid or seek out. I have a new rifle and I have not shot any .308 in the past.

This is just for training and practice, no hunting.

So, is there something you have used that was either very good or very bad? Thanks in advance for your help.

I've had very good luck with Russian "Silver Bear" in my DPMS AR-10.

Winchester or Federal (Lake City) M80 ball is also excellent.

You are new to .308 and have a new rifle. What rifle could be important especially if its M14/M1A.
Winchester & Privi Partisan (Serbia) are good plinking and good to reload. Black Hills and Hornady are more accurate and more $.

I haven't found any that were really bad, but I don't shoot steel cased .308 out of my rifles. Or, at least I haven't yet.

What type of rifle? And what type of expectations do you place on the ammo. If it's a semi-auto: do you want just good function, cleanliness from powder residue, accuracy standards? If it's a bolt gun, I imagine accuracy is what you are after.

My auto loader is an M1A and it is mostly fed a diet of military surplus ammo along with some match ammo. I've used German surplus, Portuguese surplus, lots of lake Ciyy Ball and match, along with Federal Gold Medal Match. My bolt gun is a Savage 10. It will eat anything but it seems to like bullets in the 165-180 gr range the best. It gets mostly handloads from some of the brass from the M1A.

Thanks for the replies. The rifle is a Ruger GSR. This is my first .308 and my first rifle of this type. I am not sure what to expect in terms of accuracy. Some of the reports I have read were very positive.

The barrel length is 16.1 in. and it has a 1:10 twist.

One of my Friends has a Ruger GSR. It wil basically eat anything. So, feeding isn't an issue. He was even getting good accuracy out of some steel cased Monarch ammo.

Hornady makes steel case Match Grade ammo. The case material has nothing to do with accuracy.

Woodlander,
In the future if you ever want some super accurate ammunition for it.
Try Federal Gold Medal Match GM308M 168gr. BTHP ammunition. Capable of Sub MOA groups out of most 308 rifles. And shoots well at long ranges also.

I looked at one of those in the store a few days ago. Nice rifle.

Thanks. I will be ready for that grade of ammo soon. It is good to know that it actually delivers the promised accuracy.
