Can I send primers through the mail?

How is the quality of Tulammo primers? I picked up a 1,000 pack of small pistol today. Also picked up a 1,000 pack of Federal. Between the two of them I averaged a cost of $32/1000. My LGS was out of CCI.

Primers are considered exposives. You can ship them, but it will cost you a hazardous shipping fee. Don't just put them in the mail, you'll get yourself in some real trouble.

Primers have to be sent though hazmat. I don't know anything about the tulammo primers.

That's what I figured on shipping the primers. I just wanted to make sure.

At $27/1000 for the Tulammo, I figured they were worth the chance. Trying to build up my supplies.

As I understand it Wolf and Tula are same primers. If so, began using the Wolf when we had the last primer shortage and have nothing bad to say about them. Same comment for the Tula which I now use. Other reloaders I shoot with have used Wolf/Tula too and no complaints from them about their primers, except from one gent. He didn't like them because it took too much pressure with his Lee hand primer to seat them in his brass. They seem to go in like CCI primers, a little more pressure needed.

Neither primers nor ammo can be sent by US Mail. Empty, unprimed brass and bullets not loaded into cartridges can be. Postal regs.

Ammo up to 66 lbs can be shipped by UPS or FedEx GROUND, and does not incur a HAZMAT fee. New sticker for those shipments takes the place of the old ORM-D label.



Primers and powder not loaded into cartridges ARE HAZMAT. They can be shipped by UPS Ground, but you must meet several requirements for HAZMAT shipping regs, and pay a fairly hefty HAZMAT fee to the shipper.

Side note for those asking why ammo is OK, primers are not- Primers- when loaded into a cartridge case, will not mass detonate. The mass of the ammo soaks up some of the energy. But a bucket of nothing but primers would be a different matter- one primer going bang can make the rest of the bucket go BANG! And that has happened in ammo factories- with fatal results.

You need to ad tracer/incendiary projectiles also require HAZMAT for shipping.

That is correct- tracer and incendiary ARE HAZMAT. Also anything over 50 cal (except shotshells) and anything with an explosive filled projectile.

Few years back, purchased 50 rounds of .303 Tracer. Got a call from the US Postal Inspection Service- idiot had put them in the US Mail to me.

Did not get my ammo- DID get my money back before they hauled him off.


BTW- anyone that thinks "The heck with the regs- I'll put it in the mail."- The Postal Inspectors have the highest conviction rate of any Federal law enforcement group. Unwise.

You are fortunate to get any primers. I've been scouring LGS's and online for two months now as I often reload all winter to shoot all summer. There was nothing but small pistol magnum and when I went back to get them,they were gone.

I even had a friend check a Cabelas mega store and the clerk giggled at the request. They had not seen a y in months.
