Power of a 22/250?
I don't hunt I just do target shooting. I'm curious though as what people think about a 22/250 as far as hunting bigger game than varmints. Would this round take down a deer if the shot was placed correctly. I mostly am worried about zombies though. Lmao!

A 22-250 WILL take a whitetail deer,my father in law used to use nothing but a 22-250 for deer and drop them every time, but you got to understand he took NOTHING but neckshots.

CAN it be used for deer? Yes.
SHOULD it be used for deer? No. There has been a crapload of deer taken with .22 LR. And a dozen craploads of deer WOUNDED with .22 LR. In VA, you need at least .23 cal. to be legal. |
I live in kentucky and law states you can hunt with any centerfire rifle. I've been told its not right to hunt with this caliber but I've read and heard a bunch of different thoughts. Not really interested in hunting was just curious on others thoughts about it. I figured a shot to the head would take it down.

The problem is most (if not all) factory ammo is loaded with highly frangible lightweight bullets. They have a nasty tendancy to blow up on impact and make nasty wounds. You could handload a tougher bullet, but 55 gr is about the max weight if a 1/12 twist barrel.

In Texas there are a lot of youths that start out with a 22-250 or 223 and have no problems with deer but most are handloaded with premium bullets. I have shot deer with my 22-250 AI loaded with 60gr. Nosler Partions with no problems, but will have to agree there are better deer calibers.

my personal preference for a deer caliber would be a 243/6mm as the smallest caliber i would be comfortable trying to hunt with. i know lots of people use 223 or 22-250 for deer, but i like just a tad larger caliber for my own peace of mind.
