Default Pet Load

OK I just picked up the last of my components to roll up some .45 acp.

I have bulk 230 gr JHP bullets.

CCI 300 (large pistol) primers

Unique powder

What is YOUR pet load (grains of powder) for these components. What works best (most accurate) in YOUR 1911.

I have my Lyman 48th, i also have the recommended load from alliant for use with Speer GDHP 230 gr.

I want to know what works best for YOU and YOUR 1911 so as to hit the ground running so to speak, as i am not wasting time/energy/components in experimentation "getting there". I understand some tweaking may be needed to appease my particular 1911 but am looking for a ballpark.

I have previously been led to believe that 6.0 gr of Unique w/ a 230 gr bullet was one of "those" loads. You know, the one that everyone has used with some degree of success. Either way, it works well for me. I typically use it with a plated bullet.

I use 6.2 grains of Unique topped with a 230 grain Hornady XTP. I love it!

6.0gn Unique and 185gn, 200gn, or 230gn bullet.
5.0gn Unique is often a very accurate target load.

If you are going to crimp, use a taper crimp die, as the .45ACP headspaces on the case mouth. Don't use a roll crimp.

Right now my pet load for 45 acp is 230 grain fmj or jhp, 4.5 gr of titegroup and cci large pistol primers with a light crimp. So far I have shot 500 rounds of my reloads and I am satisfied with my results. Very clean burning.

OK, how does tell the difference between roll and taper?

I have Lee Die set, it has 2 seating/crimp dies. The one worked the other didnt seem to want to work.

roll crimps are usually used on revolver rounds and some rifle rounds. 22lr,38spl,357 mag,44 mag and especially lead bullet rounds have a roll crimp. the case end is rolled into a groove in the bullet. most bolt action rifle rounds have a taper crimp. you can feel it by running your fingernail down the side. you can feel it when your nail catches on the case mouth.most semi-auto handguns headspace on the case mouth, with a straight walled handgun case with a roll crimp there is nothing to stop the case from going to far into the chamber.
