New Alliant Varmint powder
I bought some Varmint powder at my local store, no load info in the books but I found on the Alliant web site, it looks real close to H335. The load was a Nosler 55 gr ballistic tip and 24.7 gr of Varmint, almost identical to H335. I shot yesterday and it performs just as well as H335 and a little cheaper out of my 196 mini 14. My target mini is tuned to the same bullet with 21.5 gr of RL7. I will try to get pictures posted.

Here is a target from my mini 196 series and new Alliant Varmit powder. The lower left target has 1 flier and 4 grouped well, close to 1" @ 100 yds.

Is the flier in the lower right target from the first round out of the mag?

Yes, it was the 1st round out of the mag, both my target mini and my 196 gave up a 1st round flier in the same position. Both rifles are bedded, the 196 I did myself and the target was done by Gundoc. It was not the 1st shots of the day, so could be some debris in the chamber. My target mini was not tuned for this load, it still likes the RL7.

Have you tried chambering the first round the way Ruger recommends loading the Mini single shot? That is to place the round in the chamber, no mag, and let the action slam home, then insert the mag.

Usually I don't have a problem ether fliers, I will have to get out and shoot again.

Here is a youtube video of the 55 gr hp Varmagedden shooting into 2 bottles of water the size of Gatorade. The bullet blew thru the 1st and fragmented in the 2nd at 25 yds, it barely pentrated the back side of the 2nd bottle, very explosive little round.
