Need major help here asap
Need help in identifying this artillery round , had retired seal now explosive expert w/ dhs look at it this morning and we can not identify this puppy , it has numbers but we could not cross them. we even checked with ordata .I picked this thing up at a yard sale this morning . The silver part unscrews but we have not tried it or wish to try it , we dont see a fuse on top or bottom but from what i have read there is some ap rounds that have the fuse further inside . Im hoping some artillery guys can pitch in and help . We cant confirm if its a parade round 'inert' or ........  . If its confirmed live it will be disposed of no doubt . I am more than halfway afraid to even post this . If you guys can pm me I would be very thankfull . Its been sitting around for God knows how long and kicked and knocked over wet dry hot and cold , so im leaning towards inert but there is always a possibility btw you can judge the size by the atv its on, grizzly 700 4x4 ' big dang four wheeler' and it comes around 75lbs

its too big for tanks and anti-tank artillery. most liekly a naval shell of some sort. training inert rounds in the army are painted blue live are green. if there is a naval base nearby have a expert come take a look. i wouldnt mess with it till you find out. old explosives become more unstable as time goes by. if it is internally fuzed static or a bump can set it off.
unknown shells arent something to mess with.

Especially when you don't know where it came from. About 15 years ago they were doing some earth work at a train depot in Roseville, California. They uncovered some sort of life ordnance. They did some research and it turns out a train had derailed there (I think exploded too) during WWII and the accident/explosion/whatever had driven tons of bombs/shells/whatever underground.
Well when they discovered this, they went ahead and excavated the whole area and recovered a whole pelosi-pile of live ordnance.
Just think if Grandpa had found one of those with a metal detector, taken it home, kicked the bucket, then Grandson sells a 'inert' shell his grandfather had, at a yard sale.

my dhs guy has photos of it and carefull measurments , he is going to ask some of his other or still active buddies . I love how we just chinked it into the back of the truck and drove around with it all morning . but hey if it ever goes off you will never know it , i would feel so much better if it had a hole drilled in it , which im not going to do , and im scared of calling the wrond person in fear of loosing it , i only paid 35.00 for it so i wont be out alot , i will update this thread when i find out more

It looks like and by the measurement you said it is more then likely an 8". However I have not seen a twin band, sense ours is a single band made of brass. This reminds me more of a WW2 vintage Japanese Naval arty round possibly a dummy but it may not be. If I find out anything I'll let you know

I don't think it is Japanese or Russian in make, Though both used multiple bands, but they did not use a boat tail design. America mostly used the Boat tail design.
Both Japanese and Russia had the bands at the very back of the projectile at least up till the 1960's Then I believe Russia went to a BT design, single band made of steel with it's band further in a lot like ours.
The lighter area forward of the round is the most confusing part, it's design is not unlike one the Russian made Pre-WW2 But in a much larger size, (around 15") but then again it was not a BT design.
