Default Neck sizing with FL dies?

Prepped some .308 cases for my new bolt gun. I have RCBS full length dies. My Speer manual has a photo showing the FL die adjusted with a small gap between the shell holder and die. The caption states: sizer die set for neck-sizing(gap between die and shell holder). This results in no "Camming action" when at the top of the stroke. I tried it and it left an unsized portion of the neck just above the shoulder. I went ahead and adjusted it per the die instructions and ran my brass through it. The case are now FL sized.

Can the FL dies be used to neck size only? I'd rather not buy a separate neck sizing only die if I don't have to.

Yes and no.

An FL die can be adjusted to just size the neck under certain conditions. If the case has a lot of taper then the die can be adjusted to size the neck only and leave the case body untouched.

If the case has very little taper, as in the 308, then it is very difficult if not impossible to completely size the neck without making contact with the case body. Once the die contacts the case body you are no longer neck sizing.

When attempting to neck size with a FL die in a straight walled case like the 308 you will have to leave a portion of the neck and shoulder junction unsized. This unsized portion of the neck will look like a little step in the case between the shoulder and the sized portion of the neck.

This is nothing to worry about, it just looks odd. It will look something like this only not this extreme.

Personally, I would purchase a Lee Collet die and be done. These are outstanding neck sizing dies and a very reasonable price.

That step is what I experienced initially. I'm sure the body of the cartridge was sized somewhat as well. I'll look into the Lee collet dies once I find a load my 700 likes. For now I'll just keep from bumping the shoulder back. Thanks for the info.
