Default M2 Garand ammo for win 70 30-06

I'm about to order some M2 ball ammo. Just wondering if it will be ok in my Winchester 70 30-06. And is the M2 really AP?

You should be able to shoot surplus 30-06 in your gun... M2 is just a general name for 30-06.. I have M2 ball and M2 AP.. It should be marked what it is..

Will be fine for a sporting rifle. If headstamp is any date earlier than 1952, treat as corrosive primed. In addition to US milsurp, there is some Greek milsurp out there that is pretty good stuff.

M2 is not always AP, some is ball. If it has a black painted tip (as sold by the CMP) that IS armor piercing- steel cored bullet inside of jacket metal. Bear in mind that what it will penetrate is based on how far away it is, and no, doe not make tanks go up in flames- will tear the hell out of a truck.

ibwar,

There are various types of M-2 Ammunition. Most is full metal jacket 150 grain which the M-1 Garand was designed to shoot. If I am not mistaken the M-2 AP has a black tip on it. I am sure there are those here who would have more in depth knowledge of the round. I shoot my surplus M-2 in my M-1 Garands. They will shoot in your 30-06 although I may be wrong in my thinking, but I prefer not to shoot M-2 FMJ in my precision hunting rifles due to the thought of possible increased barrel wear? Shoot only copper jacketed bullets in them. So there again, I am am sure someone here can add to correcting my idea if I am just being paranoid!
After posting I noticed C-3 had also responded maybe he can expound on my thoughts and question!

I've shot a ton of M-2, both ball and AP in my model 70 Featherweight. It's all good.

OTOH. if you also own an M -1 Garand, save that ammo for your Garand.

sniper03...why do you say ap will wear out a barrel faster than regular ball?

they both have the same copper jacket contacting the barrel.......the steel core of the ap has no effect on barrel wear for it never contacts the barrel

M2Ball or AP will not wear a barrel any faster than any other FMJ ammo.
