Default M1 Garand Ammo and Loads

I fell into a good deal on a nice Springfield Armory M1 Garand yesterday. I had to buy it. It is a late 1941 rifle with a 1947 re-barrel at RIA. Barrel and action look brand new! Wood is better than OK, and all in all it is a very nice M1. It looks really nice next to the '03-A3 that I also "had to buy" just before Xmas!

Any suggestions on where to find any (cheap) Mil surplus M2 ammo? It looks to me like the Greek stuff is pretty much all gone now.

I do re-load for my Remnington M700 .30-06 (165 gr Nosler Ballistic Tip over 48.5 grains of IMR 4064). This has been my standard .30-06 hunting load for 25 years.

I'll probably be buying some bulk 150 grain FMJ bullets to reload for the M1 and 03-A3. Any recommendations for powder and loads for the 150 grain bullets for the M1 and 03-A3?

MORE .30-06 HXP AMMO SOON: The CMP has been successful in acquiring another large quantity of HXP .30-06 ammo. We expect delivery in Jan 2010 and should have the ammo ready for sale by Feb or Mar. Until we actually receive and inspect the ammo, we will not know what packaging configurations will be available, but expect them to be the same as we have had for the past few years. We do not yet know what our final cost will be. We do know that the quantity is large enough to satisfy our customer needs for several years. We will not accept any pre-orders or establish a waiting list. Thanks for your support and patience.
Hornady #7 manual has a whole section devoted to reloading for the M-1 Garand, they will send you a scan of that section if you email or contact them by phone if you don't have the manual. You can also find some load data on the forum link I posted above.

48 grains of IMR 4064 under 168 grain Sierra Match King bullet. My Garand loves to eat this load.

The preasure curve on slow burning powders like 4350 and slower can damage the op rod of M1,s. The WWII loading for M2 rounds used 48 grains of IMR 4895.

Here's a place for cheap .308" 147 grain bullets. That is pretty darned close to 150 grains. I use IMR 4895 for most of my centerfire rifle loads.

But they are pulled bullets.
