Default I picked a bad time to teach my son to shoot

As a parent, we know our kids, we know when they'd be ready to handle certain responsibilities like handling firearms, perhaps more importantly, when they are not ready. I recently decided that my son was ready, purchased a Remington 597 .22LR rifle and set aside several weekends for going to the range.

On day one we shot through about half of my supply of .22LR ammunition, 500 rounds. My typical supply of cheap .22LR was Wal-Mart - imagine my surprise when they were sold out (of .22LR and just about everything else). I wasn't too worried until I got down to about 100 rounds left and I decided to visit the local gun store who would only sell me one box at a time and they only had 50 round boxes, $5 (now $6) for CCI standard velocity. Well, I've since become a regular at this shop, and I'm glad they at least have some in stock.

I've since resorted to visiting several gun stores in multiple states to meet my ammo needs, seriously over paying for .22LR - up to 25¢ a round. I know that when the cheap stuff is available in quantity, I'll probably end up with ten thousand rounds .

Have you tried to buy online? There are scores of vendors out there.

Scores that are sold out - every so often they'll have subsonic or 22 shot. Some sites don't even list it any more.

But yeah, I've tried, and keep trying

Get a pellet rifle. It seems no one is selling out of BB's or pellets. A cheaper one CAN be just as effective as a .22, depending on range, and some of the really high end ones can be even more effective.

Get your son into a local junior rifle club.

They order standard velocity in cases of 5000 direct from distributors, and most will allow members to "piggy back" on club orders.
