Default Home Defense Ammo

I am wondering which type of 5.56 ammo is the best for home defense? I've been leaning toward the Zombie max but I would like to hear some other ideas, and maybe find something with more stopping power. I would also like to be able to hunt if I have to.

Too many options.

As I load all of mine, the choice is simple, but that would slide over to boughten stuff too.

Home defense:
Live in an apartment in close proximity with lots of other apartments, go with very thin skinned soft/hollow points, lighter weight and fast. Break-up better on sheet rock.
Live in sub-division with separations between housing.... Same as above, maybe a little heavier weight.
Live out in the country, away from close neighbors, you wanted more stopping power, move up to an '06 or 308.

What ever you settle on, learn the weapon and practice.

I am also a fan of the Blackhills remanufactured match ammo 69 grain.

I don't like to judge anyone on their weapon of choice for defense situations, but a .223? Man, unless you live in a wide open mansion that you one day (or night) might need to just start spraying lead, I wouldn't use a rifle round for home defense. I have 2 go to guns for a defense situation... A 18.5" barrel 12g or a .45 loaded with 13 rnds of hollow point. I don't have any kids (yet) and my wife knows that if I grab either, she needs to hit the floor. If you have kids or a wife, you need to think more about the collateral damage you will cause instead of whether or not your TV is going to walk out the door. I would suggest that you keep your AR tucked away for zombies. A shotgun or Judge is the way to go for home defense. Plus Winchester sells their "personal protection" rounds for most gauges. Their 12g rnds are a mix of 00 and a slug for maximum "bang for your buck." Be safe, stay safe, and remember... If you have a family, self protection/home defense weapons need to only hit the assailant. Sheetrock won't stop a rifle round.

Yeah but for now I don't own a shotgun. So my aim is to have a home defense that stops intruders with the fewest shots and minimizes the possibility of bullets traveling out of the intruders and into anyone else.

Get a Mossberg 500 12ga and load with #2 buck for indoor use. They are not that expensive. That .223 could injure folks blocks away.

i agree with getting a shotgun for HD. much better than a rifle. for HD, even a pistol is much better than a rifle. for HD/SD, you want something that will hit hard and dump it's energy quickly into the intruder, not pass through and possibly hitting an innocent bystander. Mossberg, Remington, Winchester and Maverick all make some decently priced 12 ga pumps that would work out great for HD firearms. might even check out used shotguns at a gun store or pawn shop.

I've seen a few penetration test done and birdshot never seems to get past the first wall. I live in a townhouse so a stray bullet would likely kill some one. I still keep the 40S&W by the bed just incase.

At "across the bedroom" distances, M193 ball is hard to beat. Low penetration, and devastating wounds.
