Default handgun ammo purchase question

Is there a certain rule or excuse that justifies someone who is younger than 21 be able to purchase handgun ammo for a pistol caliber carbine?

You could call it that. It is the Federal law that covers the sale of ammunition. It states that to purchase ammo for a rifle or shotgun you must be 18, for other 21, HOWEVER- dual purpose ammo (such as .22 LR) MAY be sold to someone at 18 IF it is for use in a rifle. Before most dealers will sell an 18 yr old .44 magnum ammo, they will want some proof that the 18 yr old HAS a .44 Mag carbine.

WalMart or other large retailers have a corporate policy chiseled in granite, and will say no, but a local dealer WHEN APPROACHED correctly, probably will.

it pays to chat up the local wallyworld guy. i always say its for a rifle no matter what caliber i buy. the guy is nice enough to sell it. but for most ammunition you can find the best price online. so my suggestion is save money and reasearch a lot of different online store prices. wait till yo have actually purchased whatever weapon needs the ammo and then buy online that same day

Just keep the bill of sale in your wallet. And when asked, show them the BOS and say it's for this weapon.

You could just start reloading ammo. No one bothers you and you shoot all you want. You can get a starter kit for the price of a case 9mm ammo.

I think in Indiana you can purchase pistol ammo at 18, but you can't buy a pistol until 21.
You can have a pistol given to you and have a license to carry a handgun at age 18.

7.62, what I quoted was FEDERAL law- applies in all 57 states. 18 US Code 922

(b) It shall be unlawful for any licensed importer, licensed
manufacturer, licensed dealer, or licensed collector to sell or
deliver -
(1) any firearm or ammunition to any individual who the
licensee knows or has reasonable cause to believe is less than
eighteen years of age, and, if the firearm, or ammunition is for
other than a shotgun or rifle, to any individual who the licensee knows or has reasonable
cause to believe is less than twenty-one years of age;

You mean there are NOT 57 states?

But our beloved Fuhrer.... uh President... said there was. You must be mistaken.
