I use 230 gr Speer Gold Dot in my .45's, 180 gr Gold Dot in my .40's, plus 00 in my 12 ga. From reviews I've read, the Gold Dot's are very good in terms of proper penetration and expansion.

I used to load my HD guns with Glaser Safety Slugs, but since they are specifically for combat up close and personal, I switched to Speer Gold Dot. I have a big yard, and my house is big enough that the greatest straight-line path for a bullet inside is about 75 feet, and I'm not sure the Glasers won't start to tumble before that distance. They are only effective if they hit nose first. Does anybody have any experience with them or knowledge of what is the max range to expect them to be useful?

Nothing wrong with a 22 Tom. In skilled hands, it will do the job just fine for 2 legged critters. I use wadcutters at around 750 FPS in my GP100 for home defense. I can empty my gun in just over a second. And all hits will be center mass. Power, or caliber, or fire power is no substitute for skill and presence of mind. Now if I'm out mountain biking in the Nicolet National forest in Northeast Wisconsin, my GP100 will be loaded with 357's as we have bears and wolves around here.

Yes, a .38 wadcutter is a devastating bullet. Wanna increase aerodynamics and penetration a tad, use a semi-wadcutter. It was the standard for generations before semi-autos. Inside the house that wadcutter is a keeper...

I use either Winchester PDX1 or Rangers in my guns that I carry on duty and use for home defense. I have great confidence in these rounds. Before I went to them I used Hornady TAP, which is also great ammo.

A wad cutter is a round that is flat topped and specifically designed for low velocity target shooting like paper targets.
