Default German .40 ammo

I have heard in the past that when Walther started working with the .40 for the P99 they designed it around the few specific rounds they had access to. Does anyone know what specs or makers these rounds would be? Were there limited .40 rounds available during the 1999 to 2000 timeframe they were working on the P99?

Walther was not behind the iron curtain. They had access to just about any US made .40 ammo made at the time. Specs? SAAMI had already established the specs and the Big 4 were already making ammo for it. 180 gr bullet was pretty much standard in those days with 165's coming in 2nd place.
In life, strive to take the high road....It offers a better field of fire.
