I attribute it to the fact that everything in Kalifornia is horrible.

Dunno, haven't been.

I'm assuming it was less nice during the shutdown.

only problem.....THE PRICES! everything was marked up at least 20% or more higher than every other retailer (cabelas, academy, etc).

it was nice to so many boxes of bulk ammo stacked up, however.......$40 for 100 round cheapo 9mm is NOT what i call a good price. $60 for bulk 100 rounds AE 223 is almost stupid overpriced imo.

i saw more people walk away with no ammo than purchasing. i only bought 1 box of SD ammo, cause it was ONLY about $2 overpriced.

anybody else see the same at gander?
I went to walmart sunday morning and they were stocked with more ammo than ive seen in a while. There was no 9mm but they had bulk packs of 40sw, 45acp, .223, 38spl, all kinds of ammo. But still a three box limit. But Im fine with that, everybody could get ammo and have a good time. They had federal .223 bulk packs of 160 rounds for $58 and .45 box of 100 was less than $38. No bulk boxes of 22lr but they have probally 100 boxes of 50 rounds. I was happy.

You are sailing your boat on denial. Panic buying caused the shortages, panic buying and black market profiteering continues the shortage. As soon as folks quit paying high prices for ammo, the prices will drop. It was the "fear" of an ammo shortage after Sandy Hook that lead to the latest shortages. It became a self-fulfilling prophesy.

That is the reason that there is a shortage of .22. Your stash, multiplied by a couple of million others like it, explains everything.

Why was there a panic? This panic came from somewhere? People don't just hear of a school shooting and automatically run out and buy ammo. More like they hear of your 2nd amendment destroyers on the left trying to ban magazines, guns, and doing everything in their power to 'protect the children'. Then peole said "oh yeah? Time to get me some before they take it away". And who is paying high prices, all of mine was bought before your messiah came into his dictatorship.

You're dead on but you skipped the panick before he was elected. I remember not being able to get ammo for months then too.

hawkguy,

If you are looking for 9MM plinking ammo to buy in bulk you need to visit a Gun Show. Our son has a 9MM and just bought 500 rounds for $139.00. That's pretty cheap. I posted this a couple weeks ago.
https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=288454011297664&set=a.1133974821366 52.18417.100003992037959&type=1&relevant_count=1

I bought 500 .40 S&W for $209.00 at the Salem Va Gun Show about 3 months ago.

If you are looking for quality ammo then there are sites that will list based on price per round like these - just select your caliber and parameters:

http://www.slickguns.com/category/ammo
http://ammoseek.com/?from=resultspage&gun=rimfire&cal=91&grains=0&mfg= &ikw=&ekw=&noblanks=noblanks&sortby=cpr
http://www.gunbot.net/ammo/rimfire/

These sites serve two purposes for me.
- They list the best prices per round - a good bench-mark
- They list places to buy some of which I have not heard of at this time

By the way - you wont see Gander Mountain listed on too many listings as they are not price leaders
