The 40 S&W is a "modern" round. It was developed in conjunction with the current metallurgy incorporated in today's handguns. The rounds with +P and +P+ ratings are mostly 'old' turn of the last century cartridge designs. (45ACP, 9mm Luger, 38 spl......) The pressures were at a level that their contemporary firearms could handle. To prevent the new hot rod rounds from being used in these older (read: weaker) firearms, the +P was added.

I see.So when I compare a .40 to the other major calibers,I should really be comparing a .40 to a 9mm+P and a .45 +P?A 9mm+P and .40 are somewhat comparable,but a .45+P is still the best?

Your analogy is accurate, but when you come to terms like best, know that they are subjective.

Why do you feel it necessary to list your guns?
