Default Contender 7-30 Waters

I had seen the Contender in a gun magazine when I was a kid. I have wanted one ever since. I finally picked one up yesterday. It is chambered in 7-30 Waters. I have done a little research and found that the brass is made by resizing and fireforming 30-30 brass. I have already ordered the dies from Midwayusa. I have resized brass before to make other cartridges. I even paid to ship the dies second day air because I just have to get to the range. Is anyone else shooting 7-30 waters? I am wondering what kind of range I can expect with a 14 inch super barrel. What is your favorite powder for this round. I was thinking of using Benchmark or BLC-2. Mainly because I already have both.

Default .7-30 Waters

Not quite so but I'm doing it for an 1894 model rifle. Can't give any help with the Contender. I can say I used 34.5 grs. of Reloader 15. That's a very mild load but
it is very accurate in my rifle. Might be just right for the Contender as well but I would
check a manual first.

Default 7-30 Waters

I also fireformed 30-30 brass but you can buy brass from E. Author Brown Company. Just Google "7-30 Waters brass". They sell them in 100 lot packages.

That would just take the fun out of it. What is the recoil like, compared to a 30-30? I am shooting it out of a pistol.

How much of a reduced load did you use for fire forming? I have heard that some guys use the starting load in a book. I am probably going to cut it by a couple of full grains to start.

Default Felt Recoil

I can't tell any difference in recoil between the two. BUT.....I no longer have a 30-30 to compare. I'm trying to just remember. Your reduction in load is a good one but in my 1894 that is a light load to begin with. It just turned out to be an accurate one as well. I started at 31.5 grs and worked up. The Speer Number 13 loading manual shows the same min and max for Reloader 15 between rifle and pistol. Not so for BL-C(2). In fact Benchmark and BL-C aren't even mentioned for pistol loads. In rifle BL-C(2) requires a magnum primer. SO CHECK YOUR MANUAL FIRST

I have been shooting and reloading 7x30 for 10 years it's my favorite tc round. I feel comfortable from 100 to 150 yards but that's about it for me I've been told 200 is about max but I have not tried past 150. Got a 4 power leupold on top that may be why I don't try out further with Moore power mabe? Have fun with well placed shot even 200 lb hog is dead in tracks.

I can't wait for UPS to show up!

I checked my Hodgdon Manual and it shows the same loads for pistol and rifle. It shows a starting load of 27.0 for Benchmark behind a 100 grain bullet. Should be 2179 fps out of a 15 inch barrel. I am going to try 25.0 just to fire form the cases. Then I will pick it up from there.

Thanks Larry.

I have a 4x on mine too. I may get something a little stonger later.

I think I am going to take my hunter safety class and get a license. This just sounds like too much fun.

My dies arrived yesterday. I loaded up 20 rounds for fire forming. I set up a target at 50 yards just to see what it would do. I have a 4x scope on it with a 14 inch super barrel. I shot off five rounds into each of 4 targets. Then I got out my binoculars to see how it did. At first I was disapointed. I saw that my holes were not in a tight group. I was looking at a silhoette. There were shots outside the center ring. Then I remembered...hey wait a minute that silhoette is printed on an 8 1/2 x 11 sheet of paper. I am used to shooting at full sized targets. That was shooting brass for fire forming. Plus it was getting cold and I was shaking a little. I am thinking this is going to be I great round when I dial it in.

Default Contender

So how was the kick with that little Contender? I'm curious because I've been looking for one to go with my rifle. Sounds like you aren't going to have to dial it in much Rick. Keep us posted.
