Calling all .223 and 5.56 reloaders
What's your favorite ultra-cheap-but-reliable load? I'm trying to weigh the difference in cost/quality from lower end ammo and cheaper reloads. These are strictly for plinking and shooting with friends.

Any cheap 55gr fmj

23.5gr Winchester 748

Little slow, but great for plinking.

Do you handload now, or are you starting from scratch?

Either way, with the present political climate you may find it impossible to find reloading components and factory ammo.

Right now 223/5.56 ammo is very scarce and the price is higher than it has even been, same for components. Not a good time to do a valid cost analysis between factory and handloads, especially if you are just starting out and need to purchase all the equipment as well.

I reload for 7mm, .243 and .308 now. I was actually thinking about starting to load 300BLK since I have the components needed already. I was just thinking about cost in lower end ammunition for .223/5.56

I use Ramshot TAC and pulled SS109 bullets but those are harder to find than leprechauns! Primers are either Tula or wolf if I ordered online or Federal Match at the LGS.

I now only load 300blk. I use 147 pulled bullets or Midway blemished specials which are often $20 for 100 and 150 gr. I use 16g of lil gun which has been available from time to time.

57 gr RNGC hard cast bullet
21.5 gr BLC2
R-P case
CCI small rifle primer

Using recycled (free) brass this load is about $.08 (yes that's right 8 cents) per round. You can't get .22 LR for that.
Minute of beer can at 75 yards. Cycles all my AR's. No barrel leading problems. I just make sure and flush out the gas tube with Shooter's Choice bore solvent every 500 rounds or so.

I load Speer 62gr FMJ on top of 23.5gr of Tac. I get the bullets for $14.75/100. Right near $.23 per round including primer. I could probably get cheaper by buying cast lead bullets but I prefer to shoot copper bullets out of the AR.

Get some once fired brass 1000/$130, buy in bulk if you can find it Hornady sp 55 with 21.5 gr RL7 works well if you can get it all in bulk is best.

Some 60 gr Vmax at a fair price.

I have the brass locked down from my local police and the umpteen thousands that I shoot once and reload. I'm just looking for an ultra-cheap plinking alternative, or if low-grade ammo is the way to go
