Pull a bullet and weigh it. If it's 52 grain AP, you have some excellent ammo, and there is no law stopping you from owning or shooting it.

Actually, the 5.56 green tip is a steel cone that is inside the jacket metal, and ahead of the lead core. No steel on the outside at the tip. And yes, you can buy it.

Hey c3. Why is there lake city and federal M855? I thank I have heard one company owns the other or something like that. But why do I see some M855 aka NATO green tip say fed and some say LC?

I have lots of those, read somewhere that the black tips are stronger but i have no knowledge of this being true

LC is Lake City Ammuntion Plant. a govt facility. Operated by a civilian company for the military, and they sell their excess production. Federal is a private company, running their own plant.

So is there any difference between the 2. Other than the box and the head stamp.

Lake City is run for the Army by Federal.

You will also see WCC head stamps. Winchester Cartridge Co.

And RA. Remington Arms

M-855 is simply a designation the military puts on the 62 gr enhanced penetration ammo. Various suppliers make it. Just like "M-16" is a designation for a particular rifle. It has been made by several suppliers.

So it's kind of like the name for a specific model, such as how we have AR's but we have specific models of AR's, like M&P15
