Yeah, I know I need a bigger gun for hogs. I have a .270 but I am getting a Sig M400 for bouncing around in the Mule and for a "truck gun" I was looking at the Tac-x and 60 gr. Nosler PT. I am thinking bullets in 60-70 grain range might be my best choice. Rifle will have a 1-7 twist.
I would like some input from those with experience loading the .223 for pigs.

68 -72 gr soft points

62gr. sierra sp loaded at app. 2800 fps

can be bought factory by sapson or loaded (push pull) using military m855 or ss109

I think sniper means the 63gr semi pointed which would be a good choice. I have several hundred 65gr gamekings loaded and they kill deer and pigs just fine. The 60gr partition would be a good choice as well.

Do the Sierra's hold together?? I had a bad experience with their 130gr. .270. 4 bullets blew up just inside the skin at about 50 yds. Last bullet out of 5 at a little over 100yds finally brought a 6 point down. Found nothing but glitter under the skin. It was a warm load however. Switched to Nosler after that. Speers were a very good bullet. But not as accurate as Nosler.

Experience talks though so if they have been working for Sniper I guess they should be OK

if i was going to use anything on a hog chambered in 223 it would be a ss109. your going to need that little bit of AP it has to get through bone on a off-hit. normally i would say softpoint but 223 is way light for a hog to begin with and shot placement is key so i would say use a bullet that will make it into the vitals.

thats why i say load them down (2700-2800fps) gives better penetration and less blowup

ive killed a dozen deer with 1 shot from 25-250 yards with that load

I use the Sierra 65gr Gameking's,and the Speer 70gr Soft Points for my 223 hunting duties. Both bullets penetrate and expand well on hogs and deer.
I prefer to use a bigger caliber on hogs,but if I only have one of my 223's at the time,they work fine with good shot placement at under 200 yards.
The Sierra's shoot tighter groups out of my rifles,and have a better ballistics.

Thanks guys, now I need to figure out which powders I want to try. Now I have three or more bullets to play with. Guess I'll have to spend quite a bit of time at the range.
Life's tough isn't it...

Hillbilly, Sierra's have always shot well in different calibers I've loaded for. Just didn't trust em after that incident in Uvalde. Loading down makes sense though I always had a suspicion I had them loaded too hot for that bullet.

Very few high powered rifle bullets will perform very well at short range (50 yards) on game animals.They are going to fast to expand correctly,they either explode on impact or just punch a hole through the game.
Next time shoot them in the head,and they will drop on the spot.
