Is this armor piercing?

I looked it up online and it's armor piercing. The store said it was also. What do you think of it? It's black tipped. http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7414/8...4c8f6966_b.jpg

Ahhh, 7.62 X54R Russian?

IIRC, against light armor, yes.

Rimmed, :)

It's expensive too. $7 for 5 rounds and I have 15. I'm gonna shoot one and see how it does against steel plating.

Do you know where it was manufactured? Russian black tip is armor piercing. But Russia, Poland and Czechoslovakia also produced tracer ammo with a dark green tip. Those almost look like they ma ybe green tipped on my computer screen.

Depending on the type and thickness of steel that you are shooting, the test may not tell you much. I've put 7.62x54R ammo that was not armor piercing through some mild steel plates with no problem at 100 yds.

It says 188 on it and I check 7.62x54r.net and it is armor piercing. 188 is Klimov/Novosibirsk which is Russian. Yeah it does look green on the screen but I asked some people if it was black and they said it was. Not online but people I know.

Don't know if I'd say it's piercing but it sure is loud!

How neat. Have fun making holes. Could this ammo damage the barrel?

Ruger22lr 05-23-2013 11:34 PM

Yeah far as I know AP does ruin the barrel. My Grandpa said they were AP just by looking at them. He was in the Army so he does know more than I do about it.

ap doesnt hurt the barrel. the penetrator part is surrounded by lead which has either a steel jacket that has been copper washed in the case of russian ammo or copper jacketed in case of our ammo.

what will hurt your barrel is tracers as the bits of phosphor residue are hot enough to melt barrel steel. small bits of tracer material like to flake off and leave pits in the bore.
