I recently discovered a 7.7 Jap Arisaka rifle in my late father-in-law's attic and have scoured the local gun shows looking for ammo without much luck. Any suggestions ?

Midway USA carries it- but pricier than hell. Check auctions at gunbroker.com and auction arms.com, just use 7.7 and ammunition category. It is properly 7.7 Arisaka, but is listed as 7.7 Jap by folks that flunked PC school. Yu can probably get it through Cabellas, Bass Pro Shop, and Gander Mountain.

have a competent gunsmith check the firearm. a lot of those old arisaka are either shooters or wall hangers depending on how rough they were treated. a LOT of ww2 and ww1 rifles were re-bored to make them more popular with american sportsmen when brought back. a decent smith can tell you if this has been done to yours. dont take it for granted that an old war rifle is still chambered as marked.

My buddy has two Arisakas, and reloads for them. If you aren't hanloading, that caliber is expensive!
He uses the same bullets for the Arisaka 7.7, the British .303 and the Russian Mosins - so he buys in bulk and keeps costs down.

Thanks guys for the info. If I can get some good brass I'd consider reloading for this rifle but I probably wouldn't shoot it that much. Whenever I pick up a miliotary rifle I like to put a few rounds through it just to shoot it before I store it away for my grandson. Thanks again.
