Any ammo is good for range use and plinking. Some of the really cheap stuff in steel casings is dirty as hell but it still goes boom. Not exactly sure what SD .223 or 5.56 ammo would be...at SD range a plain vanilla .223 round at 3,000+ fps is gonna get the job done. Personally I wouldn't plan on using an AR as a home defense gun, just too much power in my opinion...I prefer my Mossberg 590.
