ammo suggestions

I'm in process of building my first AR. What is some good range ammo and SD ammo to buy? I'm only looking for a small amount of SD right now. Mostly range. Don't really think i would need my ar15 if someone broke into my home. Lol.

What about 5.56 since my barrel is a 1/7 twist? Is it a waste of money or what.

.223/5.56 has nothing to do with barrel twist. its bullet weight that relates to twist. its merely a guide not truth for every rifle, but faster twists are for heavier bullets. slower twist for lighter bullets. so in theory, your barrel will shoot 69gr, or 75gr better than 50, or 55gr... by a box of each bullet wieght and see what shoots best.

Any ammo is good for range use and plinking. Some of the really cheap stuff in steel casings is dirty as hell but it still goes boom. Not exactly sure what SD .223 or 5.56 ammo would be...at SD range a plain vanilla .223 round at 3,000+ fps is gonna get the job done. Personally I wouldn't plan on using an AR as a home defense gun, just too much power in my opinion...I prefer my Mossberg 590.

I have a 1/7 and it shoot anything 62gr and above ok. It not that big of a deal for me as all the local ranges are only 35 yard max. I just loaded some 68gr hornady BTHP. I will see how they do now.
