Ammo Question

I'm from New York and as you know it's near impossible to own guns legally. I now live in Florida where I own my first gun.
Reading this forum I have certain questions that may sound silly, but what would be considered defensive ammo?

I'm definitely noob, but am eager to learn. This is a great forum

most of the time defensive ammo is high velocity, hollow point ammo. near max, or "hot" loads that work effectively at stopping threats as fast as possible. a lot of companies offer such things. like hornady critical defense. or TAP ammo. each company generally has there own little brand of defensive ammo. its up to the user to practice and find which one they feel shoots, cycles and works the best for them and there gun.

You'll find, in most cases, folks practice with the cheaper rounds, like FMJ (full metal jacket) bullets. Great for punching holes in paper.

But for a self defense round, you are looking at terminal ballistics, like amount of penetration, bullet expansion (for maximum damage), etc. You'll pay more for these, but, after all, how much is your life worth?

Thanks man, I really appreciate it...

I kind of thought that was what it was but just had to ask until I was sure

Defensive ammo is the biggest baddest boolit you can accurately shoot out of whatever gun you happen to have ;)

Just make sure you also practice with it. You can shoot all the cheap stuff you want, but if it does not shoot the same as the defensive ammo you choose the practice will be in vain.

Some of the more popular brands: Speer Gold Dot, Corbon DPX, Federal Hydra Shok, Black Hills, Winchester Ranger, Remington Golden Saber, Hornady TAP - Critical Defense or Critical Duty. Hornady seems to be the inexpensive one of the bunch with Remington Golden Saber pretty close. Speer & Corbon make good stuff (usually pretty pricey) as do most of the others. I personally like the Hornady Flex tip style bullets for carry ammo. Read test results of the varying types. Some bullets just don't work well in some guns, some guns will shoot everything well. I've probably fired a dozen types of 9's, 40's and 45's in both FMJ and HP or Flex Tip.
